Local Geelong Schools Win Millions in School Pride Program
Monday, 25 May 2009 06:26
Local Geelong schools have won $3 million for minor infrastructure and refurbishment projects under Round One of the Federal Government's National School Pride Program.
The projects include a school amphitheatre, water conservation projects, multi-purpose synthetic sports facilities, classroom upgrades, interactive electronic whiteboards, outdoor learning areas and new amenities blocks.
"A lot of our local Geelong schools were funded in this first round, which is really fantastic," Federal MP, Darren Cheeseman said.
"This funding is on top of the funding every school will get to undertake major project upgrades via the Building the Education Revolution Fund."
"I believe this is really good policy where we are able to provide local jobs, and at the same time modernise and upgrade our schools."
Construction and maintenance work will commence as soon as possible, with many of the National School Pride projects planned to begin this month.
Darren Cheeseman also encouraged local schools to submit applications for Round Two of the School Pride Program, which closes on 8 May 2009.
Today's announcement starts to deliver on the BER which is a key element of the Government's $42 billion Nation Building and Jobs Plan to stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long term.
