Cheeseman condemns $50 million Colac and Warrnambool water heist

The Federal Liberal candidate’s recent slip-up revealing secret Liberal Party plans to pump water out of the West Gellibrand River and Reservoir and into the Barwon Reservoir is stealing water from the people of Colac and Warrnambool, Federal MP, Darren Cheeseman, said today.
“What the Liberal candidate is doing is pinching water from the people of Colac and Warrnambool and sending it off to another community at the locals expense for cheap political gain.”
“There will be a number of consequences to this for the people of Colac and Warrnambool.”
“For example, one of the great competitive advantages that Colac has in attracting new industries, such as agri-business industries, into the future, is an availability of water.”
“What the Liberal candidate is saying is “too bad about your water, your jobs and your future industries, I’m giving your water to someone else”.”
“In addition, there is a real possibility this will lead to severe water restrictions for the people of Colac and Warrnambool into the future.”
“If a Liberal Government was to be elected Colac and Warrnambool can kiss goodbye to one of the biggest potential growth industries in the Region.”
Darren Cheeseman said he would strongly oppose any moves to tap into the Gellibrand River and to move this water into the Barwon Reservoir system.
“I believe the way to go is water recycling in the Geelong Region.”
“That’s why I have supported and won the two major Geelong-based water recycling initiatives at Black Rock and the Northern Water Treatment Plant, where $140 million is being invested to make the region’s water sustainable.”
