The Federal Government has let $62 million in building contracts across the Greater Geelong and Western Victorian Region for school building projects, Federal MP, Darren Cheeseman, said.
“This is great for the future of our local education system, and means hundreds of new jobs for tradespeople in across, Geelong, Colac and the Golden Plains shires and in other West Victorian shires,” Darren Cheeseman said.
“There is about to be an explosion in work for carpenters, electricians, plumbers, plasterers and painters, as this is only the first stage in a 3-stage process. So there will be a lot more building jobs to come.”
“And there will also be more jobs for local retailers and shop keepers in these towns, as there will be a lot materials required to supply these projects.”
Local companies to win work include;
• EJ Lyons Builders (Geelong-based) $21 million
• AW Nicholson (Ballarat-based) over $15 million
• BDH Construction (Geelong/Colac-based) over $7 million
• Flynn Builders (Ballarat-based) over $7 million
• Spence Building and Joinery (Colac-based) nearly $5 million
• Rendien Builders (Geelong-based) over $3 million
• Searle Brother (Ballarat-based) $2 million
Within the Greater Geelong area, the work will include work undertaken on;
• Seven Geelong schools (Bellaire, Belmont, Drysdale, Grovedale West, Highton, Montpellier, Manifold Heights primary schools)
• Three Bellarine Peninsula Schools (Ocean Grove, St Leonards and Wallington primary schools)
• Three Golden Plains Schools (Teesdale, Woady Yalloak (Scarsdale) and Rokewood primary schools.)
“I think it is fantastic policy that we can provide work for tradespeople in a difficult time, and in the same breath set up important educational infrastructure for the future,” Darren Cheeseman said.
