We'll fight for Alcoa workers

It is very dissappointing to hear the Alcoa announcement, with many workers now facing an uncertain future and a nervous wait to hear the results of the review of the Point Henry smelter. I have neighbours and friends who work for Alcoa. My focus in these circumstances is very simple. I will fight to keep Alcoa in Geelong, to keep job security for the workforce with decent working conditions.

Darren Cheeseman has launched a strong defence of local manufacturing, and the local car industry in particular, releasing detailed statistics and new elements to the local campaign to save Ford. “Geelong relies more on the manufacturing sector to provide jobs for local residents than many other areas around Australia, with the census figures showing 15,050 people who live in the region employed in manufacturing,” Darren Cheeseman said. “Whilst it is true our regional economy is transitioning to an increasing proportion of the workforce employed in tourism, retail and community services but there is absolutely no reason at all to give up on manufacturing.” . “The history of Australian industry has been our ingenuity and our ability to adapt across a range of industries, and the Australian automobile industry is a great example of how we are doing that, developing high tech solutions that lead the world.”
Geelong gets new cancer centre

Greater Geelong is set to get a new state-of-the-art cancer centre, with a $26 million kick-start funding boost from the Gillard Government. This exciting development which will save many lives includes a linear accelerator which will deliver radiation therapy, a 32-bed oncology ward, a 24-bed palliative care ward, and 20 new accommodation units.

Residents of the city of Geelong in Victoria will soon have greater access to historical, cultural and artistic resources with $10 million federal government funding towards the construction of the $45 million Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. Federal Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean today announced that funding will be provided to the City of Greater Geelong as part of the first round of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF), worth almost $1 billion.

Cats fans and sports fans generally in Greater Geelong will benefit from improved spectator facilities and amenities with the announcement of $10 million in federal government funding towards the total project cost of $46 million at Kardinia Park. Federal Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean announced funding has been made available to the Geelong Football Club Limited as part of the first round of the Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF), worth almost $1 billion.
